LGBTQ History Curriculum Development

The FAIR Education Act requires that California K-12 schools provide Fair, Accurate, Inclusive and Respectful representations of people with disabilities and people who are lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender in history and social studies curriculum. Aided by Professor Rouse from the Social-Science Education Program at San Jose State University, this session will explore the FAIR Act and present sample FAIR Act units and lessons. Work time is built into the session and teachers will be supported while explore these and other FAIR Act resources and lesson plans.
Join other Bay Area teachers in this workshop sponsored by the Santa Clara County Office of Education in partnership with the UC Berkeley History-Social Science Project. The session will help teachers explore and start implementing the FAIR Act, with an emphasis on the Framework’s encouragement of inquiry and student engagement.
Teaching to the FAIR Act is now mandated by the California History-Social Science Framework. This Framework presents an approach to standards-based instruction that encourages the inclusion of social justice themes and civic engagement in your curriculum. Its inquiry-based orientation invites student-centered exploration of important issues and topics, and its emphasis on ‘citizenship’ (broadly defined) helps make the study of history relevant to students’ lives and provides a launching point for meaningful service learning and community engagement.

In this one-day workshop and three follow up webinar sessions, participants will use the iCivics curriculum. This full-day “Civics Academy” will focus on teachers’ civic content knowledge, modern instructional strategies for teaching civics (i.e. game-based learning and adapting materials for English Learners), and their ability to cultivate pro-civic behaviors. Resources and activities will be both broad and grade-level-differentiated, and all will include strategies and resources supporting English Learners best practice. Additionally, they will include alignment to the History Social Science Framework with an emphasis on the Civic Learning Outcomes in regards to civic knowledge, skills, and values.
