SCCOE Local Criteria for the State Seal of Civic Engagement

Updated: Dec 19, 2022

After months of working with community partners, families, staff and students, the SCCOE Local Criteria for the State Seal of Civic Engagement is here!

The vision is that ALL California students, especially those in traditionally marginalized populations and communities, have early and frequent civic learning opportunities during the PK through 12th grade experience. The main purpose is to formally recognize or promote student civic engagement in 11th and 12th grade; as well as, encourage and create pathways to become civically engaged in democratic institutions. In addition, the seal will show future employers and colleges that the student has empathy, vision, can create a plan, and facilitate change in the community, no matter how big or small!

The SCCOE stands out from others, because our local criteria is first of its kind in the state. In addition, our local criteria aligns with our Power of Democracy Initiative. Finally, we understand supporting the students in our special programs with civics needed to be of the highest priority. We created a digital brochure. The goal of our local criteria is that we not only provide guidance, but act as a model for others. Go to sccoe.to/SSCE to learn more.

Remember, students can be civically engaged at any level. As educators, we must remember to adapt, accommodate, and believe all students can achieve…and they will!!
