SAN JOSE, CA – On Wednesday, June 20, the Santa Clara County Board of Education presented a Civic Engagement Award to Luther Burbank School District.
​"This award is bestowed upon districts which enrich the lives of their students by promoting non-partisan civic engagement learning opportunities," stated County Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Mary Ann Dewan.
"Luther Burbank School District outperformed the entire county, taking the top three positions in the Law Day Essay Contest," stated County Board of Education President, Rosemary Kamei.
This contest, hosted by the Superior Court of Santa Clara County, the Santa Clara Bar Association, and the Santa Clara County Office of Education, invited eighth-grade students throughout the county to answer the essay prompt, "What Role Should Public Opinion Have on the Three Branches of Government?" This program is one of the many ways the SCCOE is helping to support non-partisan civic engagement in Santa Clara County Schools as part of the Power of Democracy initiative.
On hand to receive the district award was Christopher Ortiz, Superintendent of Luther Burbank School District.
On July 18, the County Board of Education will honor the student winners of the essay contest.
